The Neuk Participates in National Mental Health Reference Group

We are proud to share that The Neuk recently participated in the inaugural meeting of the Mental Health Reference Group, a collaboration hosted by the Edinburgh Futures Institute and Police Scotland. This significant event brought together representatives from organisations including Public Health Scotland, Penumbra, Cruse Scotland, Samaritans, and many others, to discuss and drive forward improvements in mental health support and crisis intervention across Scotland.

The reference group aims to enhance person-centred approaches through collaboration with Police Scotland’s Mental Health Taskforce. This initiative responds to the 2023 HMICS Mental Health Report, focusing on improving referral pathways such as the NHS Mental Health Pathway and Distress Brief Intervention, alongside better community triage systems. It also seeks to realign police training to equip officers with the knowledge and skills needed to offer compassionate and effective support.

At The Neuk, we value the opportunity to bring the voices of those we support into this critical conversation. Wendy Given, our COO, represented us at the meeting and shared insights on the importance of addressing potential gaps in services and creating a streamlined response for those in mental health crises. Wendy said:

“It was inspiring to collaborate with partners and represent the experiences of those who use our services. Being included in the Mental Health Reference Group ensures that the voices of third-sector organisations are integral to shaping a more compassionate and effective response for individuals in crisis.”

The Neuk’s involvement highlights our commitment to building robust partnerships and improving mental health support systems in Scotland. We look forward to continuing our work with Police Scotland and other key stakeholders to ensure that individuals in crisis receive timely and appropriate support.
